City of Suffolk Virginia is a fast growing community located in the Hampton Roads metro area (Norfolk-Virginia Beach).  Suffolk is strategically located between Virginia Beach and Williamsburg, within minutes of Virginia Port Authority facilities, providing easy connections to major highways and railroads.  Suffolk is home to the U.S. Joint Forces Command and is know worldwide as a major center for modeling and simulation as well as food processing and distribution.

City Profile


Utilities

Suffolk's strong, growing economy is supported by a sound network of public services. A long-range Capital Improvements Plan also includes aggressive expansion and upgrade of utility services to those areas not currently served.

Power

Electricity is supplied and distributed to residential and commercial consumers by Dominion Virginia Power and Community Electric Cooperative.

Natural Gas

Residential and commercial consumers also have natural gas available; it's supplied by Commonwealth Natural Gas Corporation, and distributed by Virginia Natural Gas in the southern two-thirds of the City and Columbia Gas of Virginia in the northeastern portion of the City.

Water

The City of Suffolk supplies water from its Bob House water treatment plant at Lone Star Lakes. Average daily use is 3.2 million gallons; maximum daily capacity is 6 million gallons, and storage capacity is approximately 4 million gallons ground and 3 million gallons elevated. The Department of Environmental Quality recently issued a permit to the City of Suffolk to pump an additional four million gallons of water per day from two wells, essentially guaranteeing adequate water supplies for well into the future.

Sewer

Sanitary sewer service is provided throughout the City's major corridors. The collection system is operated and maintained by the City and the major transmission mains and treatment facilities are operated and maintained by the Hampton Roads Sanitation District.

Telephone

Customers in Suffolk take advantage of telephone service supplied by Verizon; their services include high-tech fiber-optics and digital telecommunications. A variety of additional services are available through companies such as Cox Fibernet and others.
